About Us
The League of Women Voters of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas is a chapter of the National League of Women Voters.
The National American Woman Suffrage Association gave birth to The League of Women Voters in 1920 when the Nineteenth Amendment belatedly recognized women as full citizens and the NAWSA, its mission fulfilled, disbanded.
The initial aim of was simply to guide and support the newly enfranchised female citizens in the intelligent exercise of their long delayed right to vote. But the League had impact far beyond this, becoming one of the most respected political organizations.
In the beginning only women were eligible for membership in The League. This had a certain logic, especially in the decades after enfranchisement when women were still actively excluded from leadership roles in other political organizations. In 1973 both men and women became eligible to join the League.
The League remains non-partisan. By this is meant that the LWV never endorses, or opposes, any given candidate or political party at any level of government. However The League is strongly political and, after thorough study and discussion, does take consensus positions on major political issues, which are then supported by education and by advocacy.
The League is dedicated to "Making Democracy Work." Which means an informed electorate, which has confidence that their vote really does count.
The League is a nonpartisan political organization whose mission is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in our government.
